- Description:
- Abstract: A copy of a letter from Henry Willock, HM Chargé d’Affaires in Persia [Iran], to Lord Conyngham, Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, sent from Tehran and dated 18 April 1824.The letter concerns the proposed transfer of responsibility for diplomatic relations between Persia and Britain to the British Government in India, which has been decidedly rejected by the Shah [Fath-‘Ali Shāh Qājār] and the Persian Government. Willock speculates on the reasons for the refusal, including the Shah's suspicions of British imperial encroachment into Persia and the weight which relations with HM Government give Persia in its relations with Russia.Willock also forwards notes of his meetings with Persian Ministers on the subject (IOR/L/PS/9/69/183).The letter was enclosed in Willock’s letter to John McCulloch, Secretary to the Political Department of the East India Company, dated 20 April 1824 (IOR/L/PS/9/69/181).Physical description: 1 item (6 folios)
