- Abstract: The item consists of copies and extracts of correspondence and minutes cited in, or enclosed with, extracts from a Bombay [Mumbai] Political Consultation, 4 June 1845. The papers contained in this item are partial enclosures to a Political Letter sent from the Government of Bombay to the East India Company Court of Directors, 10 June 1845. A copy of this Political Letter can be found at IOR/F/4/2122/100076, alongside details of further enclosures.The item relates to rumours that customs duties, at Shiraz, on the exportation of horses and mules from Persia [Iran] to India are going to increase little by little with the intention of eventually stopping this export altogether. These rumours are reported by Mirza Reza [Mīrzā Reżā], Acting Agent at Shiraz. Zal Beg [Zāl Beg], a Persian dealer involved in the trade, has also complained about the rise in duties to Lieutenant-Colonel Justin Sheil, HM Minister Plenipotentiary and Envoy Extraordinary at the Court of Persia. The correspondents are: the Government of Bombay and Lieutenant-Colonel Samuel Hennell, Resident in the Persian Gulf.The item concerns complaints about transit duties being wrongly levied between Bushire [Bushehr] and Shiraz on goods belonging to British merchants. The Prince-Governor of Fars has issued a rukum [raqam] addressing this and, at the request of Hennell, a mohussil [muhaṣṣil, a tax collector or commissioner] was employed to convey the rukum to the different Custom Houses. - Abstract: The volume chiefly comprises copies of letters sent to the Residency (with some addressed to the Resident, Captain Samuel Hennell) by the various government agents, including: Moollah Hussain, the agent at Sharjah; Khojah Reuben, the agent at Muscat; the Government agent at Bahrain [referred to as Bahrein throughout]; and reporters and news writers at Shiraz. All of these letters are English translations; the originals (presumably in Arabic and Persian) not being included in the volume. A small number of copies and drafts of outward letters, written by Hennell, are also included in the volume (folios 102-03, 110).Many of the letters contain translations, or translated extracts, of letters from various rulers around the Gulf, including: the Imam of Muscat; Maktoom [Shaikh Maktum bin Butti], chief of Debay [Dubai]; Khalifa bin Shakboot [Khalīfah bin Shakbut], chief of Aboothabee [Abu Dhabi], Sultan ben Suggur [Sultan bin Saqr], chief of Ras ul Khymah [Ra's al Khaymah]; Salman bin Nasser, chief of Al Bidda (also spelt Biddah); Mahomed bin Abdullah, chief of Bremi [Al Buraymī].Letters from the Sharjah Agent and rulers on the Arab Coast chiefly concern relations between the various tribes and towns, including disputes between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, and include account of hostilities on land and sea, feuds, and negotiations for peace.
