Abstract: Papers regarding the 1913 uprising of the Ibāḍī imamate and the tribes of the interior of Oman under the leadership of Sālim bin Rāshid al-Kharūṣī, against the authority of the Sultans of Muscat and Oman, Fayṣal bin Turkī Āl Bū Sa‘īd and Taymūr bin Fayṣal Āl Bū Sa‘īd.The volume consists of Muscat News reports submitted by the Political Agent at Muscat, plus correspondence between the Political Resident in the Persian Gulf, the Senior Naval Officer in the Persian Gulf, and the Government of India Foreign and Political Department. There are also translated copies of communications received from Sālim bin Rāshid al-Kharūṣī,and Taymūr bin Fayṣal Āl Bū Sa‘īd.The correspondence and reports provide details of the following: the progress of the uprising; the intervention of Indian troops and British ships; the bombardment of rebel positions at Barka [Barkā] and Kuriyat; negotiations between the Imam and the Sultan of Muscat and Oman; support for the uprising outside of Oman; proposals for the establishment of a levy corps at Muscat; and the Sultan's attempts to raise money, enlist foreign aid, and purchase weaponry.The volume includes a divider which gives the subject and part numbers, the year the subject file was opened, the subject heading, and a list of correspondence references contained in the volume by year. Treaties and Engagements Relating to the Arab Principalities in the Persian Gulf(ff 305-328 and ff 617-640) and
Treaties and Engagements Relating to Oman (Muscat)(ff 406-422 and ff 641-657). Also included are copies of related treaties, agreements, and correspondence for the Persian Gulf (ff 329-405 and ff 540-616) and Oman sections (ff 423-477 and ff 485-539), which cover the periods 1806-1927 and 1798-1928 respectively.The proofs are accompanied by interdepartmental correspondence discussing the contents of the narratives, and the possibility of amendments and additions being made, such as for the parts entitled 'The Wahabis and Nejd' and 'Kuwait' in the Persian Gulf section. In addition, the correspondence discusses the question of whether to include recently concluded agreements with Mohammerah [Khorramshahr] and Kuwait in the Persian Gulf section. There is some limited correspondence related to the collection of this information, which includes applications made by Edward Charles Ross, Political Resident in the Persian Gulf, to the following:Samuel Barrett Miles, Political Agent and Consul at Muscat.L Gabler, Deputy Director of the Persian Gulf Telegraphs/in Political Charge of the Gwadur [Gwādar] Agency.The Residency Agent, Bahrain.The majority of the biographies have been submitted via standardised forms with entries for the following; name, father, wife, tribe, residence, and children. Each entry has a biographical history for each subject, while some have both an entry in Arabic, and an entry in English (i.e. a translation). At the back of the volume is a single entry in Persian. The returns for Oman — supplied by the Political Agent and Consul at Muscat — do not follow this format, and are instead supplied as manuscript biographical histories.The entries are arranged into sections. The first section is not labelled, but may represent the returns from Gwadur.
