Abstract: This file consists of letters related to several general subjects of the East African-Arabian Slave trade; domestic Omani politics; general affairs of trade. Of note are circular letters from the Political Resident in the Persian Gulf to Trucial Coast Shaikhs and the Sultan of Oman on their responsibility for the eradication of slavery. These also include Arabic copies of engagements entered into by the Trucial Shaikhs of the Persian Gulf with the British Government for the abolition of the African slave trade. The file also includes the Muscat Agency administration report 1871-72, and Fortnightly Muscat Agency news reports. Abstract: Copy of a letter in French from Jean Robbio, a French courier captured in Bushire, to Monsieur Dallons, a French envoy to Mascat [Muscat], of 11 April 1810. This letter was part of the papers seized from Robbio at Bushire by Stephen Babington, in charge of the Residency at Bushire (see IOR/L/PS/9/68/60). The letter describes Robbio’s audience with the Sultan of Mascat [Sa‘īd bin Sulṭān Āl Bū Sa‘īd Sayyid] and the latter’s refusal to provide Robbio with subsistence; complains of his situation in Mascat; and requests assistance from Dallons.The letter was enclosed in HM Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Persia [Iran], Sir Harford Jones’s secret letter of 14 September 1810, which was received on 6 February 1811.Physical description: 1 item (2 folios)

Abstract: The volume is comprised of two parts (IOR/L/PS/10/994/1 and IOR/L/PS/10/994/2) and contains telegrams, despatches, correspondence, memoranda, printed reports and notes relating to the development of oil concessions in Qatar and Oman.IOR/L/PS/10/994/1 consists of memoranda, letters, and correspondence concerning the development of an oil concession for Qatar. Correspondence discusses the form of wording to be used in responding to a request from the Eastern and General Syndicate Limited to contact the Shaikh of Qatar [Shaikh Abdullah bin Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani] concerning oil exploitation in his territory. Also discussed are the terms of the British agreement with the Shaikh of Qatar to defend against attack from land and relations between the Shaikh of Qatar and Ibn Saud. IOR/L/PS/10/994/2 consists of memoranda, letters, and correspondence concerning the development of an oil concession for Muscat. Topics discussed include negotiations with the Anglo-Persian Oil Company for an oil concession in Muscat.
