- Abstract: The item consists of copies and extracts of correspondence and resolutions cited in, or enclosed with, extracts of a Political Letter from the Government of Bombay to the East India Company Court of Directors, 15 January 1856. A copy of this letter can be found at IOR/F/4/2641/169196, alongside details of further enclosures. The item is the second in a series of twelve items on events in the Persian Gulf.The item contains a letter from Lieutenant Herbert Frederick Disbrowe, Assistant Resident in Charge, Persian Gulf, to the Government of Bombay. He reports the actions taken by Captain Arnold Burrowes Kemball, Resident in the Persian Gulf, to prevent a conflict between the Al Ali [Āl ‘Alī] and the Boo Soomait [Āl Būsmayṭ] tribes on the Persian [Iranian] side of the Gulf. His letter contains copies of correspondence between: Kemball; Charles Augustus Murray, HBM's Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary at the Court of Persia [Iran]; Mahomed Shereef [Muḥammad Sharīf], Officiating British Agent at Lingah [Bandar-e Lengeh]; and Commodore Richard Ethersey, Commanding Indian Naval Squadron in the Persian Gulf. Details of the two tribes' preparations for the conflict are included, as well as communications Kemball has had with Sheikh Khuleefah ben Saeed [Shaikh Khalīfah bin Sa‘īd], Governor of Lingah, and Sheikh Ali ben Sultan [Shaikh ‘Alī bin Sulṭān].The Government of Bombay forward copies of the above to the Government of India and the Court of Directors.The title page of the item contains the following references: 'Bombay Political Department', Draft Number '633 [18]56', 'Collection No. 1 of No. 1 of 1856', 'Vol: 2', and 'Examiner's Office'.
