- Description:
- Abstract: A copy of a letter from Peter Michell, Secretary to the Court of Directors of the East India Company, to William Digges Latouche, Resident in Bussora [Basra], sent from East India House and dated 28 February 1783.The letter reports that preliminary articles of peace have been signed between Great Britain and France, the United States of America, Spain, and the United Provinces of the Netherlands [American War of Independence, 1775-1783]. It forwards copies of peace articles relating to the East Indies (not enclosed), in particular regarding the cessation of hostilities beyond the equinoctial line set for July 1783, and asks Latouche to forward related instructions to the three Presidencies in India as soon as he receives them.Attached to the letter are reports from Nice and Turin dated 15 January-12 February 1783. The reports concern the assembly at Nice of a large French force by Baron de Saint-Geniès, thought to be heading for India to capture Tranquebar [Tharangambadi] or establish a colony.Physical description: 1 item (6 folios)
