- Abstract: A copy of a letter from Harford Jones, Resident in Bagdad [Baghdad], to Mohammed Aga, [Muḥammad Āghā], Ambassador of the Pashaw [Büyük Sulaymān Pāshā, Governor of Baghdad] to Persia [Iran], sent from Bagdad and dated 28 March 1799.The letter concerns an embassy rumoured to be travelling across Persia to the Court of Baba Khan [Fatḥ-‘Alī Shāh Qājār, Shāh of Persia], which may be either French or British. At Jones’s request the Pashaw has ordered Mohammed Aga to discern the identity of the embassy, and thereafter to assist it if it is British or hinder it if it is French.Attached is a letter from Jones to the head of the embassy in the event that it turns out to be British, dated 28 March. The letter introduces Mohammed Aga, offers assistance, and reports news from the French Revolutionary Wars in Europe and Egypt.Also attached is a letter from Mohammed Aga to Jones, acknowledging the receipt of the above letters and accepting the assignment.Physical description: 1 item (2 folios)
