- Abstract: This item contains copies of two letters:1. A letter from Harford Jones, Resident in Bagdad [Baghdad], to Lord Elgin, HM Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, sent from Bagdad and dated 6 April 1801. Jones complains of the difficulties of hiring ‘Tartars’ [couriers] in Bagdad and again presses Elgin to intercede with the Porte [Government of the Ottoman Empire] on this issue. The letter also reports the arrival and departure of Captain John Malcolm in Bagdad and forwards various correspondence.2. A letter from Lord Elgin to Harford Jones, sent from Constantinople [Istanbul] and dated 11 March 1801. Elgin describes the measures he has taken to address Jones’s complaints about Tartars in Bagdad.
