- Abstract: This item contains copies of two letters:1. A letter from Harford Jones, Resident in Bagdad [Baghdad], to Lord Elgin, HM Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, sent from Bagdad and dated 8 October 1802.The letter concerns arrangements for the succession of Ally Pasha [‘Alī Pāshā al-Kahyah] as Governor of Bagdad. The letter reports that Ally Pasha has sent money to be distributed in Constantinople [Istanbul] to secure his nomination as Governor and has invited an agent of the Porte [Government of the Ottoman Empire] to come to Bagdad and settle the debts of the late Pasha [Büyük Sulaymān Pāshā]. Jones also urges that the Porte issue a firman (edict) confirming Ally Pasha’s appointment without delay in order to secure public order in Bagdad, and also urges that the Porte send an ambassador to Persia [Iran].2. A letter from Harford Jones to Peter Tooke, Agent of the East India Company in Constantinople, sent from Bagdad and dated 8 October 1802.The letter concerns arrangements for the transfer of money to the Capi Kiayassi [Agent of the Governor of Baghdad in Constantinople] and the transit of mail.These letters were enclosed in Jones’s letter to John Roberts, Chairman of the Court of Directors of the East India Company, dated 2 October 1802 (IOR/L/PS/9/76/266).Physical description: 1 item (2 folios)
