Abstract: An extract of a letter from Peter Tooke, Agent of the East India Company in Constantinople [Istanbul], to Harford Jones, Resident in Bagdad [Baghdad], sent from Constantinople and dated 20 August 1802, with remarks by Harford Jones dated 22 September 1802.Jones discusses arrangements for the transit of mail between Constantinople and Bagdad, defending the payment of gratuities to ‘Tartars’ (couriers) and the carriage of mail other than official dispatches.Attached is a table displaying expenditure on gratuities for couriers in the period May 1801-April 1802.A duplicate of this correspondence is catalogued as IOR/L/PS/9/76/264.Physical description: 1 item (6 folios)
