- Abstract: This item comprises copies of enclosures to a despatch from the Government of Bombay [Mumbai] Secret Department to the Secret Committee, Number 63 of 1847, dated 3 July 1847. The enclosures are dated 16 June-2 July 1847.The primary document is a letter from Stafford Bettesworth Haines, Captain in the Indian Navy and Political Agent at Aden, to Arthur Malet, Secretary to the Government, Bombay, relating to:An attack on the Aden Kafila (camel train, caravan) and Haines’s complaint to the Sultan of Lahidj [Lahej] to control his subjects, although the latter claims he has no power or money to do soThe concerns of Baniyan [Banyan or Bania] merchants at Aden about the lack of vessels arriving from Mocha lately, and Haines’s intention to send a schooner to investigate the towns on the lower Red Sea, namely Mocha, Loheia [Al Luhayyah] and Hodeida [Al Hudaydah].Physical description: There is an abstract of contents of the despatch, numbered 1-6, on folios 224. These numbers are repeated for reference on the verso of the last folio of each enclosure.
