The item is the second in a series of five items on the ‘slave trade’ [trade in enslaved people].The item relates to the case of Elmas [also rendered in text as Elmass], a youth from Madras [Chennai] who was rescued from enslavement by Archibald Ogilvie, Vice-Consul at Judda [Jeddah], and sent to Aden. The case is reported to the Government of Bombay by Stafford Bettesworth Haines, Captain in the Indian Navy and Political Agent at Aden, who is assisting Elmas.
