- Abstract: Correspondence relating to the mining of red oxide on Abu Musa island by a German company, Wonckhaus, and the British desire to prevent the Germans gaining a monopoly and presence on the island. Correspondence includes a note by Major Percy Zachariah Cox on the case and Hassan bin Samaiyah's involvement as well as printed reports. Correspondents include the Residency Agent, Lingah; Politial Resident Persian Gulf; Imperial German Consul, Bushire.Physical description: The main foliation sequence, which should be used for referencing, begins on the cover page, which is number 1A. It is followed by 1B, and then by folio number 2. After folio number 3 the sequence jumps straight to number 5 – there is no number 4. The sequence then runs through to 120. Number 121 has been missed out, so folio number 120 is followed by number 122. The sequence then continues through to 381, which is the inside of the back cover of the volume. It should be noted that letters have been used to number folios at two other points in the sequence: 229 is followed by 229A; and 329 is followed by 329A. This sequence consists of small pencil numbers, in the top right corner of each folio.The second foliation sequence begins at the first letter, which is the third folio of writing and runs through to number 356, the last folio of writing.This foliation sequence is written in pencil (using slightly larger numbers), in the top right corner of each folio.

- Abstract: This file contains correspondence concerning the Persian claim to the island of Sirrī, as well as their claim to and occupation of that place. In addition there is information concerning rival claims by Trucial Coast rulers, details concerning Dubai pearl divers on the island and details concerning other Persian Gulf islands, including Abu Musa [Abū Mūsá] and Tanb [Ṭanb].The correspondence in this file is between the Political Resident in the Persian Gulf at Bushire; ‘Abd al-Qasim and ‘Abd al-Laṭīf, Residency Agents at Sharjah; Āghā Muḥammad Amīn Badr, Residency Agent at Lingah [Bandar-e-Lengeh]; Ṣaqr bin Khālid Āl Qāsimī, ruler of Sharjah; Maktūm bin Ḥashr Āl Maktūm, ruler of Dubai; and various British officials in the Foreign Department of the Government of India. 16. 'Red oxide on Abu Musa, 1898-1934'
- Description:
- Abstract: This memorandum was prepared by John Gilbert Laithwaite in May 1934 and comments on the history of the concession of red oxide on Abu Musa [Abū Mūsá]. The concession was granted in April 1898 by Sheikh Salim bin Sultan [Sālim bin Sulṭān Āl Qāsimī] while acting as Regent. On his return the ruling Sheikh, Sagar bin Khalid [Ṣaqr bin Khālid Āl Qasimī], saw nothing objectionable it. The concession was made to Hassan Samaiyah, his son Abdullah and Isa bin Adul Latif [‘Īsá bin ‘Abd al-Laṭīf], son of the Residency Agent at Sharjah. The concessionaires were described as British subjects and the interest in the concession of Herr Wonckhaus [Robert Wonckhaus] and Frank Clarke Strick is detailed. The memorandum also describes the claim of the Persian Government to Abu Musa and notes that the concession granted for five years to Frank Clarke Strick in January 1923 expired at the beginning of 1928 but there is nothing to show that any application was made for a renewal.Physical description: The main foliation sequence commences at the first folio and terminates at the last folio; these numbers are written in pencil, are circled, and are located in the top right corner of the recto side of each folio. 18. 'File 22/33 TANB ISLAND'

- Abstract: The file contains correspondence about Arab sovereignty and occupation of the Gulf islands of Tanb (also spelt Tamb, Tunb), Nabiyu Tunb, Abu Musa (also spelt Bu Musa) and Sir Bu Na’air (also spelt Sir Bunair) in the light of a renewed territorial claim by Iran (formerly Persia) in 1948. The main correspondents are Lieutenant-Colonel Sir William Rupert Hay, Political Resident in the Persian Gulf, Bahrain; Cornelius James Pelly, Political Agent Bahrain; Patrick Desmond Stobart, Political Officer Trucial Coast, Sharjah and officials at the Foreign Office, London.The file includes two similar reports dated January 1949. One report is of a visit to the islands of Abu Musa and Tanb, both under the rule of the Shaikh of Ras al Khaimah [Ra’s al-Khaymah], by the Political Officer Trucial Coast. The other report is of a visit to the islands of Abu Musa and Sir Bu Na’air, by G.F.M. Best, Commander, Royal Navy aboard H.M.S. Loch Quoich, describing their population, economy and any evidence of smuggling or Persian occupation. There is also an English translation of an extract from an article published in the Tehran newspaper ‘Tirhan-I-Musavvar’, reporting a public disturbance between Arabs and Persians in Bahrain and also Arab aggression against the Persian islands of Tanb and Abu Musa in October 1949. The file ends with a few British naval reports, together with an English translation of a letter of thanks from Shaikh Saqr bin Muhammad the Ruler of Ras al Khaimah, about the removal of a Persian flag from the island of Nabiyu Tunb, by the Senior Naval Officer in the Persian Gulf, in September and October 1949.Physical description: Foliation: the main foliation sequence (used for referencing) starts on the outside front cover (f 1) and ends on the inside back cover (f 39). - Abstract: The file comprises correspondence relating to Sharjah’s sovereignty over the islands of Abu Musa [Abū Mūsá] and Tunb, chiefly in response to a Persian challenge to this sovereignty over Abu Musa. The principal correspondents in the file are the Political Resident in the Persian Gulf (Lieutenant-Colonel William Rupert Hay); British Embassy representatives at Tehran; and representatives of the British Navy, including the Senior Naval Officer in the Persian Gulf, and Captain Richard Courage of HMS Flamingo.The file contains:correspondence relating to reports of the visit of a Persian warship at Abu Musa in February 1951, including: initial reports of the intention of Persian officials to visit Abu Musa to take a census of the population and distribute identity cards (f 36); British arrangements to send a vessel to investigate the claims, including discussion of whether the Ruler of Sharjah should accompany them; a report by Captain Richard Courage of HMS Flamingoof his visit to Abu Musa in March 1951, with notes on red oxide mining operations on the island, ownership of the island, the visit of a Persian warship on 25 February 1951, and details of a conversation held between a Persian officer and a shopkeeper on the island (ff 15-17); the Political Resident’s recommendation that the new ruler of Sharjah should visit Abu Musa more frequently;correspondence between the Political Agent at Bahrain (William Scott Laver) and the Political Resident, November 1951, relating to efforts to trace papers on the history of the ownership of Tunb island in the Residency archives. - Abstract: The file discusses the concession for red oxide (also known as ferric oxide) which the Golden Valley Ochre and Oxide Company Limited (Eric Innes Pocock) was exploiting at Abu Musa [Abū Mūsā] including the company’s relationship with the Shaikh of Sharjah (Shaikh Sulṭān bin Saqr Āl Qasimī) and working conditions on Abu Musa Island. - Abstract: The file comprises correspondence relating to the work of the Golden Valley Ochre and Oxide Company Limited (Commander Daniel Harvey Rainier) in the Persian Gulf.The initial correspondence between the Company and the Residency Agent at Sharjah discusses obtaining permission from the Shaikh of Ras-al-Khaimah [Ra’s al Khaymah] (Sulṭān bin Sālim Āl Qasimī) to investigate red oxide deposits on Tunb Island.The later correspondence relates to two thefts which occurred in December 1943 and January 1944 on the Company’s property and stores at Abu Musa and includes a report from the Company’s watchman on the island (Aḥmad bin ‘Abdullāh) and correspondence with the Company’s Agent at Sharjah (Hosain bin Ḥasan Amad) and Cunningham and Gibaud, a loss Adjusting company appointed to handle the claim.A series of file notes which were maintained as a record of the correspondence in the volume can be found at folios 45-47.Physical description: The main foliation sequence (used for referencing) commences at the front cover with 1, and terminates at the inside back cover with 48; these numbers are written in pencil, are circled, and are located in the top right corner of the recto side of each folio.
