37. File 3498/1912 ‘Aden News Letters’
- Description:
- Abstract: The volume contains the Aden weekly newsletters for the years 1912 to 1916, which are also referred to as the Aden or Residency weekly political intelligence summaries or diaries and were compiled by the British Political Resident at Aden. They contain a record of current local events, news and information and were regularly submitted by the Aden Resident to the Secretary to the Government of India in the Foreign Department at Delhi, who then circulated them to the India Office and Foreign Office in London. The newsletters contain information about Turkish troop movements in Yemen; the changing relations and frequent outbreaks of hostilities between the numerous Yemeni tribal chiefs and in particular, the state of their allegiance to either the occupying Ottoman Turks or the British Government, identifying them accordingly as either Turkish or British stipendiary shaikhs. Included in the Resident’s reports are the sources of his information: shaikhs, officials, merchants, traders and travellers visiting or writing to him at Aden, as well as news received from the British Assistant Resident stationed on Perim Island.Physical description: Foliation: the foliation sequence commences at the first folio with 1 and terminates at the last folio with 291; these numbers are written in pencil, are circled, and are located in the top right corner of the recto side of each folio. 38. File 664/1904 'Turkish Arabia: Status of British Protected Persons'

- Abstract: This file contains correspondence between British officials regarding the status of British-protected persons (primarily from the native states of India) within the territory of the Ottoman Empire. The topics discussed in the file include the consular representation of poor British Indian subjects in the vilayet (province) of Baghdad, the status of Baluchis resident in Basra, the granting of visas to Afghan pilgrims in Mesopotamia (Iraq), an application to be registered as a British-protected person made by Shaikh Omar Abdullah Basaar, a resident of Hodeida (al-Hudaydah) in Yemen and the status of Kashmiris resident in the city of Kerbala. The correspondence is primarily between officials of the Foreign Office, the India Office and the Government of India. The file also contains a copy of a letter in French sent from the Ottoman Ambassador in London to the Foreign Office concerning the status of natives of Afghanistan and Baluchistan within the Ottoman Empire (folios 81-82). The volume includes a divider which gives the year that the subject file was opened, the subject heading, and a list of correspondence references contained in it arranged by year. - Abstract: The volume contains parts 1 and 2 of the subject ‘Turco-Persian Frontier Commission Expenditure'. Part 1 (IOR/L/PS/10/405/1) concerns the appointment, composition, financial arrangements of the Turco-Persian Frontier Commission. Part 2 (IOR/L/PS/10/405/2) concerns the compensation for Mr G E Hubbard, Secretary to the British Commissioners, for injuries sustained whilst serving on the Commission. Each part includes a divider which gives the subject and part numbers, the year the subject file was opened, the subject heading, and a list of correspondence references contained in that part by year. This is placed at the back of the correspondence. - Abstract: The volume contains drafts and counter-drafts of the Anglo-German Convention on the Bagdad Railway, plus agreements involving the Bagdad Railway Company, the Ottoman Railway Company, the Anatolian Railway Company, and the Ottoman Government. There is also correspondence regarding the negotiations, conducted between the following: the India Office Political Department; the Foreign Office; the British Ambassador to Berlin (Sir William Edward Goschen); the Imperial German Ambassador to London (Karl Max Fürst von Lichnowsky); the Councillor at the German Embassy (Richard von Kühlmann); and the Ottoman Finance Minister (Mehmed Cavid Bey).Each part includes a divider which gives the subject and part numbers, the year the subject file was opened, the subject heading, and a list of correspondence references contained in that part by year.
