- Abstract: This volume consists of the journal (log book) of the voyage of the East India Company ship London(the commander of which was Captain Matthew Wills) from England to Sirratt [Surat] and back to England, recorded by the Master’s Mate James Birkdell. The entries are dated 12 March 1639 to 17 July 1640.Birkdell records the ship setting sail from Tilbury for the Downes [Downs] on 12 March 1636, and its arrival in the Downs on 15 March. Following the ship’s departure from the Downs on 25 March 1639, the entries record the ship anchoring in the following places: St Lawrence [St Augustine’s Bay, Madagascar] (7 to 17 July 1639); Johanna [Anjouan] (30 July to 16 August 1639); Swalley [Suvali, Surat] (16 to 24 September 1639); Gomeroone [Bandar-e ʻAbbās] (11 to 24 November 1639); Swalley Hole (16 December 1639 to 29 January 1639 [New Style date 29 January 1640]); and St Hellena [Saint Helena] (21 to 29 April 1640). The ship then anchored in the Downs on 8 July 1640, before sailing from the Downs and anchoring at Eiriffe [Erith] on 17 July 1640.Each page of the journal is divided into five columns: days (of the month); latitude; longitude; variation; and remarks. Entries for when the ship was at sea include measurements of latitude, longitude, and variation, and remarks mostly relating to: wind direction and weather conditions, the course of the ship, and sightings and bearings of land.The journal does not include daily entries for every day the Londonwas at anchor, it mostly just records the ship’s arrival at and departure from ports. The journal covers the ship's visits to the following places (dates are those of arrival): 13 December 1718, the Downs; 28 May 1719, Johanna [Anjouan]; 28 June 1719, Mocha; 13 September 1719, Tellecherry [Thalassery]; 27 September 1719, Callicut [Kozhikode]; 8 October 1719, Cochin [Kochi]; 24 October 1719, Cape Comerin [Kanniyākumāri, also written as Cape Comarin]; 20 January 1719/20, Cape of Good Hope (also written as Cape Bona Esperanca); 24 February 1719/20, St Hellena [Saint Helena]; 17 June 1720, Woolwich; 23 June 1720, Deptford.The journal begins with the following inscription: 'A Journall of our Intended Voyage by Gods permission in the Good Ship Susanna From London towds. [towards] Mocha In the East Indies Anno Domini 1718', which is signed by John Edwards (folio 1).The journal contains daily entries (although not for every day of the voyage) in eight columns. The first two columns note the latitude, the meridian distance from various places, and the date. 5. Morice: Journal, John Cary, Chief Mate

- Abstract: A journal recording a voyage of the East India Company ship Moricefrom England to Mocha. The journal was recorded by the Chief Mate John Cary, and the Captain of the ship was Christopher Wilson (also spelled Willson in the journal).The journal entries are dated 24 August 1728 to 22 January 1729/30 [both Old Style and New Style dates are given in the journal, and years in this description are written as they appear in journal].The verso of the first folio of the journal contains the following inscriptions: ‘This is M Jn Carys Original Journall Chiefe Mate of the Morice, Chr: Wilson’ and ‘Rec.[eive] 3 June 1730’.The entries start when the ship was at Deptford, after which it moored at Gravesend, and subsequently anchored in the Downs.The entries then record the ship being anchored in the following places: Table Bay (23 January to 8 February 1728/9); Mocha (19 to 31 May 1729); Babelmandel [Perim or Mayyun in the Bab-el-Mandeb strait] Harbour (3 to 16 June 1729); Mocha (21 June to 31 July 1729); Bombay (17 August to 9 September 1729); and Tellecherry [Thalassery] (23 to 25 September 1729). The journal then records the ship anchoring in St Hellena [Saint Helena] Road on 17 December 1729, and it was still there when the entries end on 22 January 1729/30.The journal also includes a list of the ship’s company (folios 5 to 6), in the form of a table listing the names and quality (position or rank) of each member of the crew, with a column to indicate whether they had died, run away or had been discharged, and a column for the time when this had taken place (the latter two columns contain no entries).Daily entries for when the ship was at sea consist of tables recording the following: the date and day of the week; hours (H); knots (K); fathoms (F); courses; winds; weather; and other comments. These other comments mostly relate to the following: wind and other weather conditions and sea conditions; other navigational measurements; sightings and bearings of land; sightings of, and encounters with, other ships and sailing vessels; and actions performed by the crew.
