2. 'File 1/5 IV Applications for Employment: Menial Establishment'
- Description:
- Abstract: The file consists mostly of applications for employment with the Bahrain Political Agency at menial grades. The applications are mostly from Bahrain subjects. The positions applied for include: farrash/farash [ferash], peon, sweeper, maidservant, launch nakhuda [nakhoda], khalasi, bearer, driver, motor launch driver, crewman, car driver, office boy, telephone operator, and any post. The papers also include requests for advances of pay, complaints of non-attendance, resignations, requests for pay rises, certificates of good character (references), papers concerning losses of personal property, complaints leading to deductions of pay, complaints about conduct, requests to resolve issues relating to pay, papers concerning disciplinary action and fines, requests for leave, petitions for financial assistance, office orders, and papers relating to clothing. Many of the letters are written in Arabic, and some items are signed by means of thumbprints.Physical description: Foliation: the foliation system in use commences at 1 on the first folio after the front cover and continues through to 389 on the last folio before the back cover. - Abstract: The file consists mostly of applications for employment with the Bahrain Political Agency at menial grades. The positions applied for consist of: farrash/farash [ferash], peon, nokhoda [nakhoda], launch driver, office boy, and any post. The papers also include a letter of resignation from a sweeper, certificates of good character (references), papers concerning disciplinary matters, office orders, medical certificates issued by The American Mission Hospital, notes, personal comments on applicants, and roster of farashes, July 1944. Many of the letters are written and signed in Arabic. Some items are signed by means of thumbprints.Physical description: Foliation: the foliation system in use commences at 1A on the front cover and continues through to 49 on the last folio (the back cover appears as f. 36, before the notes). - Abstract: The file relates to the pay and allowances of the menial staff of the Bahrain Political Agency (including those holding the positions of farrash/farash [ferash] (also referred to as peon), sweeper, gardener, launch driver, nakhuda [nakhoda], khalasi, member of hospital staff, sweeper, dhobi, guard, office boy, car driver, car cleaner, and others).The papers include office orders recording leave, change of staff and pay rises; requests for pay increases from individual members of the menial establishment; papers relating to the payment of gratuities; applications for employment; papers relating to resignations arising from 'inadequacy of pay'; comparative statement of showing rates of pay etc of drivers and cooks in Bahrain Petroleum Company (BAPCO), British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) and Naval Base, October 1945; list of prices of commodities for March 1945 and October 1947, with percentage increase; statement of salaries of Adviserate peons, 1946; statement showing present basic pay and dearness allowance of the menial establishment of the Political Agency, Bahrain, with covering letter dated 13 January 1948; notes on disciplinary matters; personal letters; and list of members of menial establishment (giving names, designation, and date of joining service) with details of total emoluments when His Majesty's Government (HMG) assumed responsibility for pay, and present total emoluments, c. 1950.Includes letters in Arabic, letterheads in Arabic, and thumbprints overwritten with signatures in Arabic.Physical description: Foliation: the foliation system in use commences with 1A on the front cover and continues through to 88 on the back cover. - Abstract: The file contains correspondence and related papers concerning the service at the Bahrain Political Agency of members of the menial establishment (including those holding the positions of farrash /farash [ferash] (also referred to as peon), dhobi, gardener, driver, and khalassi [khalasi]).The file includes requests for leave; requests for increases of pay; a request for assistance with travel costs; a request for official dress for a driver; papers relating to the issue of certificates (references); office orders; papers relating to disciplinary matters arising from unauthorised absence of members of the menial establishment; and list of farrashes and sweepers and their pay.The notes discuss the issue of the pay and allowances of farrashes in a broader context, especially relative to the pay of 'coolies' employed by the Bahrain Petroleum Company (BAPCO), and contain recommendations that their pay should be increased in order to avoid 'wholesale resignations'. Also includes list of farrashes who had been dismissed or resigned, 1 October 1944 to 30 September 1945. Some of the letters containing requests from members of the menial establishment are in Arabic and are accompanied by translations or summaries in English. - Abstract: The file consists of correspondence between the Political Agency, Bahrain, and suppliers of clothing in India; export notes; receipts; orders; correspondence about the payment of bills; letters from members of the menial staff requesting the supply of certain items of clothing; Office Order giving scale of summer and winter liveries to be issued to the inferior staff of the Agency, June 1946; letter from the Political Agency, Kuwait to the The Conference and Supply Department, Foreign Office, London, requesting permission to make local adaptations to official uniforms for staff, both because of the climate and local opinion, August 1949; Supplies Department forms (not completed); clothing measurement forms (not completed); and extracts from official regulations governing uniforms. There are also extensive notes at the rear of the file.The types of uniform items covered include brass buttons; brass coat of arms badges; cotton piece goods; various types of cloth; headgear; ghatras[red and white checked checked headcloths]; farrash livery; sandals; and native overcoats.The Arabic content of this file consists of bilingual commercial letterheads and signatures of members of the menial staff written over thumbprints.The covering dates of the correspondence in this file are 9 October 1945 to 12 September 1950. - Abstract: The file relates to the provision of items of uniform for members of the Menial Establishment of the Political Agency, Bahrain. The papers consist of correspondence, invoices, receipts, telegrams, despatch notes, and a personal letter, and cover correspondence with suppliers; correspondence relating to the supply of buttons, coat of arms badges, winter liveries (cold weather uniforms), summer liveries, daggers for uniforms of ferashes, items of uniform for Agency Launch crew, cotton piece goods, and cloth; samples of material; correspondence with departments of the Royal Indian Navy concerning the supply of naval stores; arrangements for ensuring the good appearance of members of staff; and papers relating to the shipping of items of uniform, including bills of lading and insurance documents.The Arabic language content of this file consists of one invoice, and a number of signatures.The date of the final piece of correspondence in this file is 17 June 1945. 8. 'File 1/5B Clerical and Menial Staff: Black List'
- Description:
- Abstract: The papers consist of correspondence from private companies and official bodies in Bahrain to the Political Agency, Bahrain and the Bahrain Government listing former employees by name whom they wished to debar from future employment elsewhere in the state. The reasons alleged for placing the individuals on an employment 'black list' were (a) because they had resigned because they could not obtain a salary increase above that paid by other companies in Bahrain; (b) because the person had resigned - no other reason given; (c) because they taken part in a strike of sweepers and cartmen; (d) because they had left their jobs at the Naval Base, Bahrain, without notice. The names of the individuals were then distributed to officials of various businesses, members of the military, and the Jewish Community.The closing date in the overall date range of this file, which is later than the date of the final piece of correspondence (11 August 1945), is produced by an entry in the notes at the rear of the file. There is a further set of notes dated 21 September 1948 (f. 10), which appears to have been misfiled.Physical description: Foliation: the foliation sequence for this description commences at the front cover with 1, and terminates at the inside back cover with 11; these numbers are written in pencil, are circled, and are located in the top right corner of the recto side of each folio.
