- Abstract: The item consists of copies and extracts of correspondence and minutes cited in, or enclosed with, a Political Letter from the Government of Bombay to the East India Company Court of Directors, dated 28 November 1853, and found at IOR/F/4/2536/147461. It is the sixth in a series of seven items about the 'slave trade' [trade in enslaved people].The item relates to reports from Hajee Yacoob [Ḥājjī Ya‘qūb], Native Agent at Shargah [Sharjah], to Captain Arnold Burrowes Kemball, Resident in the Persian Gulf, about 'slave trade' activity between Zanzibar, Amulgavine [Umm al-Qaywayn], Rusul Khymah [Ra’s al-Khaymah], and the Batinah coast of Oman. A copy of this Political Letter can be found at IOR/F/4/2238/112322, alongside details of further enclosures. The item is the twentieth in a series of fifty-nine items on events in the Persian Gulf.The item contains a letter from Major Samuel Hennell, Resident in the Persian Gulf, to the Government of Bombay, dated 8 June 1847. Hennell reports intelligence that a force under command of Bin Aoon the Shureef of Mecca [Muḥammad bin ‘Abd al-Mu‘īn bin ‘Awn, Sharīf of Mecca] and Ameer Khaled ben Saood [Amīr Khālid bin Sa‘ūd] has advanced into Nedjd [Najd] and communicated to Ameer Fysul the Wahabee Chief [Amīr Fayṣal bin Turkī bin ‘Abdullāh Āl Sa‘ūd, leader of the Wahhābī] that if he wishes to continue governing Nedjd he must pay an annual tribute to the Porte [Government of the Ottoman Empire]. Hennell further reports that Ameer Fysul replied he was authorised to govern the region by Mahomed Ally Pasha [Muḥammad ‘Alī Pāshā] and would resist any further advances until he had heard from his superior. - Abstract: The volume is entitled Personalities, ‘Iraq, and is a British intelligence report, compiled around 1917 by the Arab Bureau, Basrah [Basra] Branch, on prominent individuals in Iraq at that time (the Arab Bureau was a section of the Cairo Intelligence Department established in 1916). The report was printed by the Superintendent Government Printing, India, Delhi. The item is the seventh in a series of fifty-nine items on events in the Persian Gulf.The item relates to a report from Hoskut bin Yusoof [Ḥizqīl bin Yūsuf], Acting Native Agent at Muscat, to the Persian [Iranian] Secretary, dated 17 May 1847. The papers contained in this item are partial enclosures to a Political Letter sent from the Government of Bombay to the East India Company Court of Directors, 10 June 1845. A copy of this Political Letter can be found at IOR/F/4/2122/100076, alongside details of further enclosures.The item relates to a report written by Captain Atkins Hamerton, HM Consul and the Company's Agent in the Dominions of the Imam of Muskat [Muscat], on a conversation he had with the Imam of Muskat on the subject of a group based in Zanzibar who intend to reduce the level of British influence there. Multiple people are blamed by the Imam and by Hamerton for the ill feeling towards the British. - Abstract: Typewritten fortnightly intelligence summaries describing events in the district of Khorramshahr, Persia [Iran], produced by the British Consul at Khorramshahr (Frederick Charles Leslie Chauncy; Andrew Charles Stewart; Vere William Digby Willoughby). The diaries cover: the movements of foreign subjects in the district; local government officials and notables (including movements, appointments, and official visits); foodstuffs (supply, scarcity, prices, smuggling, hoarding); security (criminal incidents); the activities and movements of tribal Arabs in the district, including the disarmament of tribes by the Persian military in early 1945; health and hygiene (including reports of epidemics); the Anglo-Persian Oil Company at Abadan; United States troops at Abadan; the Persian military and gendarmerie; pilgrim movements; public relations (education and war propaganda); from early 1945, reports on Soviet propaganda and activities in Khorramshahr and Abadan; in 1946, the activities of the Tudeh Party of Iran at Abadan.The file includes a divider, which gives a list of correspondence references contained in the file by year.
