Abstract: The item consists of copies and extracts of correspondence and minutes cited in, or enclosed with, a Political Letter from the Government of Bombay to the East India Company Court of Directors, 31 January 1848. A copy of this Political Letter can be found at IOR/F/4/2238/112322, alongside details of further enclosures. The item is the forty-fifth in a series of fifty-nine items on events in the Persian Gulf.The item relates to instructions given to Captain Lowe, Commanding the Indian Naval Squadron in the Persian Gulf, by Major Samuel Hennell, Resident in the Persian Gulf, as a consequence of the ‘disturbed state’ of the lower Persian [Iranian] coast of the Gulf. Hennell’s initial instructions are to protect vessels sailing from Congoon [Kangan], and to inspect and potentially seize vessels belonging to Mogoo [Moghuyeh], Charrack [Bandar-e Charak], and Asseeloo [Bandar-e ‘Asaluyeh]. It is the fourth in a series of seven items about the 'slave trade' [trade in enslaved people].The item contains a letter from the Government of India to the Government of Bombay, dated 31 August 1853, and a minute by the Governor of Bombay, dated 19 September 1853. Both relate to instructions from the Governor-General of India, following the recent discovery of enslaved women within the entourage of Behjut Aga Effendi [Bahjat Āghā Effendī] during the latter’s recent visit to Bahrein [Bahrain].The title page of the item contains the following references: 'Bombay Political Department', Draft Number '161 1854', 'Collection', 'Vol: 4', and 'Examiner's Office'. Abstract: The file contains correspondence regarding the grant of the title of KCIE (Knight Commander of the Order of the Indian Empire) to His Excellency Shaikh Sir Hamad bin `Isa Al Khalifa. Letters of congratulation regarding the appointment were conveyed by the Political Agent in Bahrain Percy Gordon Loch to Shaikh Hamad bin ‘Isa Al-Khalifa. These were sent by British Officials and Gulf Rulers including the Political Resident in the Persian Gulf, Bushire, Trenchard Craven William Fowle, the British Ambassador in Baghdad, and Shaikh Shakhbut bin Sultan, Ruler of Abu Dhabi. There are also letters from Shaikh Hamad to the Political Agent asking him to convey his thanks to those who congratulated him.The file contains a circular dated 1937 that King George VI has approved that in future all British Authorities shall address Shaikh Hamad by the title ‘His Highness’ instead of ‘His Excellency’.
