1. 'File 39/23 I Negotiations for seabed oil in Bahrain, Trucial Coast and Qatar'

- Abstract: The file contains copies of letters, in English and Arabic, sent by the Political Agent at Bahrain to the local rulers requesting them to issue a proclamation claiming their jurisdiction over the seabed adjacent to the coasts of Qatar, Bahrain, and Abu Dhabi. A copy of the draft proclamation is on folio 32. The file also includes correspondence with the Petroleum Development and with the Agency at Sharjah.Physical description: Foliation: the main foliation sequence commences at the front cover with 1 and terminates at the back cover with 33; these numbers are written in pencil, are circled, and are located in the top right corner of the recto side of each folio. An additional incomplete foliation sequence is also present in parallel between ff 16-32; these numbers are also written in pencil, but are not circled, and are located in the same position as the main sequence.
2. 'File 39/24 Seabed concession, Qatar'

- Abstract: The file contains correspondence, mostly in English and Arabic, between the Ruler of Qatar, Shaikh ‘Abdullāh bin Jāsim Āl Thānī (from August 1949 Shaikh ‘Alī bin ‘Abdullāh Āl Thānī); the Ruler of Bahrain, Shaikh Salmān bin Ḥamad Āl Khalīfah; the Adviser to the Government of Bahrain and the Political Agent at Bahrain; regarding the jurisdiction over the seabed adjacent to the coastline, for the purpose of oil drilling offshore. The papers include a dispute between the Ruler of Qatar and Petroleum Development Qatar Ltd on the interpretation of the oil concession with regard to the Qatar coastal waters and Decision of Arbitrators (folios 13-19).The file also contains correspondence with the Ruler of Qatar and Superior Oil Company, concerning the Company’s request for permission to drill in the shoals represented on folio 41, and considering claims of the Ruler of Bahrain over the same shoals.Physical description: Foliation: the main foliation sequence commences at the front cover with 1 and terminates at the back cover with 52; these numbers are written in pencil, are circled, and are located in the top right corner of the recto side of each folio. - Abstract: The file consists of five volumes containing copies of oil concessions in the Persian Gulf region and correspondence between British officials related to them.1) Persian Gulf - Concessions in Bahrein [Bahrain], Kuwait &c. (sic) Correspondence 1932 to July, 1933 (folios 1-140);2) Qatr [Qatar] Oil Concession and Connected Documents; Dubai Oil Concession and Connected Documents; Sharjah Oil Concession and Connected Documents (folios 141-170);3) Memorandum and Articles of Association of Petroleum Development (Trucial Coast) Limited (folios 171-210);4) Concession Agreements with Ajman (1951), Dubai (1937), Sharjah (1937) and Umm Al Qaiwain (1945) (folios 211-300);5) Notes concerning the Abu Dhabi Petroleum Company Ltd (folios 301-306).The notes include a map of the company's pipelines and terminal facilities, a map of its air routes, a diagram of its central production facilities at Habshan and an aerial photograph of Jabal Dhanna.Physical description: Condition: A mixture of loose sheets and bound pamphlets contained in five separate volumes.Foliation: The foliation sequence runs through five parts as a single continuous sequence. This sequence commences at the first folio in part one and terminates at the last folio in part five, which is a photographic item in a polyester sheet; these numbers are written in pencil, are circled, and are located in the top right corner of the recto side of each folio. The file contains the following foliation errors: 158, and 158A; 276, and 276A.

- Abstract: The file contains papers relating to the defence of Qatar.It includes a copy of a letter from the Political Resident in the Persian Gulf to the Air Officer Commanding, British Forces in Iraq, 8 August 1938, concerning the defence of Qatar, including the possibe need to protect an oil field and pipeline against tribal attack and sabotage in the event of Petroleum Development (Qatar) Limited striking oil.It also includes: a copy of a paper entitled ‘Appreciation of the Situation regarding the Defence of the Qatar Peninsula Against Tribal Attack and Sabotage’, by the Major R G Price, GSO2, Air Headquarters, British Forces in Iraq, January 1939 (which includes a blueprint sketch map of Qatar, IOR/L/PS/12/3936, f 13); and copies of letters from the Political Resident in the Persian Gulf to the Air Officer Commanding, British Forces in Iraq, 2 March 1939, and from the Political Agent at Bahrain to the Political Resident in the Persian Gulf, 17 February 1939, regarding Price's report.In addition, the file includes correspondence dated January 1943 between the India Office, the War Office, and the Commander-in-Chief, Middle East, relating to the proposed gift of guns and ammunition to the Shaikhs of Qatar, Dibai [Dubai, also spelled Debai in the file], and Sharjah.The file includes a divider, which gives a list of correspondence references contained in the file by year. This is placed at the back of the correspondence.Physical description: Foliation: the foliation sequence (used for referencing) commences at the inside front cover with 1, and terminates at the last folio with 27; these numbers are written in pencil, are circled, and are located in the top right corner of the recto side of each folio.
