Abstract: The file relates to the activities of certain Omanis in Bahrain (particularly three named men), who had 'set up as pseudo-religious leaders' and had encouraged practices characteristic of 'so-called Darwishes' [dervishes] (f 3), and the reaction to their presence in the state by the Government of Bahrain. The practices had included producing a kind of 'hysterical insensibility' in the people they influenced, and encouraging them to pierce their own limbs with nails, which in some cases had led to serious medical consequences. The papers include correspondence between the Adviser to the Government of Bahrain (Charles Dalrymple Belgrave), and the Political Agent, Bahrain (Lieutenant-Colonel Arnold Crawshaw Galloway); a report by the State Medical Officer, Bahrain (Richard Henry Barter Snow); and a copy of the Order of Prohibition issued by the District Magistrate, Bahrain, prohibiting the presence of the three Omanis in Bahrain for a period of two years, under the terms of the Bahrain Order-in-Council.The date range gives the covering dates of the correspondence; the last addition to the file is an entry in the notes dated 15 November 1947.Physical description: Foliation: the main foliation sequence (used for referencing) commences at the front cover with 1 and terminates at the inside back cover with 11; these numbers are written in pencil, are circled, and are located in the top right corner of the recto side of each folio. An additional foliation sequence is also present in parallel between ff 3-8; these numbers are also written in pencil, but are not circled, and are located in the same position as the main sequence.Pagination: the file notes at the back (ff 9-10) have been paginated using pencil.
