1. ‘File 28/1 J Sabotage to oil wells, etc’
- Description:
- Abstract: The file comprises copies of correspondence and notes containing guidance, issued in response to reports from the War Office, of German plans to sabotage oil fields and refineries and blow up shipping.The file includes: a copy of a telegram from MICE (Middle East Intelligence Centre) in Cairo, dated 3 December 1939, reporting that Germany ‘may have started a campaign to damage oil wells, refineries, etc.’ (f 3); a letter from the Political Agent in Bahrain to John S Black, Chief Local Representative for the Bahrain Petroleum Company (BAPCO), dated 6 December 1939, forwarding information of the reports regarding German sabotage of oil installations, and advising vigilance (f 5); a copy of a letter from Alexander Cadogan of the Foreign Office, dated 10 September 1940, enclosing two sets of precautions, entitled ‘Anti-sabotage precautions’ (f 11) and ‘Additional Precautions’ (f 12). The first set of precautions relates to the planting of explosives with delayed-action fuses in ship’s cargoes, with a list of the types of objects and containers in which explosives might be hidden, and what such explosive devices might look like. The second set of precautions describes measures taken to ensure security in relation to ship’s passengers, pilots, ship's stores, ventilators and portholes, loading/unloading at night.Physical description: Foliation: the main foliation sequence (used for referencing) commences at the front cover with 1 and terminates at the back cover with 13; these numbers are written in pencil, are circled, and are located in the top right corner of the recto side of each folio. 2. ‘File 28/18 Sabotage smuggling etc of mail’
- Description:
- Abstract: The file comprises correspondence and notes relating to the possible sabotage and smuggling of mail: a telegram from the Senior Naval Officer in the Persian Gulf (SNOPG), dated 18 November 1940, reporting a suspected case of sabotage in which a leaking jar of acid was found in a mail bag (f 2); a second telegram from the SNOPG, dated 1 December 1940, reporting that neutral ships occasionally smuggle mail, and asking whether arrangements exist for the examination of mail and ships’ boxes at British ports (f 3); the Political Agent at Bahrain’s reply to this last telegram, to the SNOPG, dated 22 December 1940, stating that the postmaster is ordered to send for censorship all mail brought ashore from neutral ships (f 5). 3. General No. 35 of 1874, Regarding the ‘Wilful Damages’ Done to the English Line of Telegraph in Persia, and the Non-Payment of Compensation by that Government, and Drawing Attention to the Importance of the Subject

- Abstract: This item consists of copies of a Political Despatch from the Government of India Foreign Department to the Secretary of State for India, dated 27 November 1874, submitting papers relating to the ‘wilful damages’ done to the English line of telegraph in Persia [Iran], and the non-payment of compensation by that Government, and drawing attention to the importance of the subject.Physical description: Foliation: the foliation sequence for this description (used for referencing) commences at f 327, and terminates at f 340a, as it is part of a larger physical volume; these numbers are written in pencil, are circled, and are located in the top right corner of the recto side of each folio. The sequence contains six foliation anomalies: f 327a, f 328a, f 333a, f 334a, f 335a, and f 340a.

- Abstract: The file contains papers relating to the defence of Sharjah and Dubai (also spelled Dibai in the file).The papers consist of correspondence, and a copy of a report entitled ‘Appreciation of the Situation Regarding the Defence of Sharjah and Dibai Alighting Area Against Tribal Attack and Sabotage’, by Major R G Price, Air Headquarters, British Forces in Iraq, dated January 1939, which includes a ‘Sketch map showing approximate layout of SHARJAH & DIBAI’ [IOR/L/PS/12/3935, f 18].The correspondents and recipients are as follows: the India Office; the Political Resident in the Persian Gulf; the Political Agent, Bahrain; the Air Ministry; the War Office; the Commander in Chief, Middle East; and the Air Officer Commanding, British Forces in Iraq.The file includes a divider, which gives a list of correspondence references contained in the file by year.
