- Abstract: Correspondence and notes relating to the law of succession in Persia [Iran], and possible events in Persia, in the event of the death of the Shah, Reza Shah Pahlavi. The file includes:Correspondence from the British Embassy in Paris, dated 1 March 1930, informing Government of the death in France of the ex-Shah of Persia, Ahmed Kadjar [Ahmad Qajar], along with cuttings from the French newspapers Le Tempsand Le Matin, reporting on ex-Shah’s death (ff 42-45).A report, written by Lieutenant-Colonel Percy C R Dodd, Military Attaché at the British Legation, Tehran, dated 3 December 1930, on the present relations between the Shah and his army, and its bearing on the stability of the Pahlavi regime (ff 35-38).A report entitled The Future of Persia, written by the Political Resident in the Persian Gulf, Lieutenant-Colonel Trenchard William Craven Fowle, dated October 1931 (ff 14-30).The text of an interview between an American journalist called Mr James, and the Persian Prime Minister Abdolhossein Teymourtache [Teymourtash], undated. - Abstract: Correspondence from the British Legation in Tehran, press cuttings, and copies of Persian Government announcements (in French) relating to the movements and activities of members of the Persian royal family, and in particular, the Crown Prince, Muḥammad Reza Pahlavi. The file covers: the Crown Prince and the Persian Minister of Court’s [Abdolhossein Khan Teymourtash] visit to Europe in 1931; reports on the education of the Crown Prince in Geneva, Switzerland, between 1935 and 1936; the Shah’s betrothal of his two daughters in 1936; the engagement and wedding of the Crown Prince to the Egyptian Princess Fowzieh [Fawzia Fuad] in 1938; constitutional changes to Persian law and the conference of Iranian nationality upon Princess Fowzieh; British officials’ desire to discourage ‘sensational newspapers and magazines’ from Britain from covering the Crown Prince’s wedding; the activities and movements after the Second World War of Ashraf Pahlavi, twin sister of Muḥammad Reza Pahlavi, and her husband Ahmed Chafik Bey, Director of Civil Aviation in Iran.Physical description: Foliation: the foliation sequence (used for referencing) commences at the front cover with 1, and terminates at the inside back cover with 74; these numbers are written in pencil, are circled, and are located in the top right corner of the recto side of each folio. - Abstract: Correspondence relating to articles published in the British newspaper press (and to a lesser extent, the British Indian press) about Persia [Iran] and the Shah of Persia, Reza Shah Pahlavi. The file includes cuttings of many of the newspaper articles referred to in the correspondence, most being published in The Times. The correspondence concerns the diplomatic implications (both feared and realised) arising from press articles that are critical of Persia, its government, or the Shah’s rule. Amongst the articles appearing in The Timesthat are included in the file are two written by the travel writer Robert Byron, entitled Middle Eastern Journey: The Glories of Islam(f 101) and Middle Eastern Journey: Hindu Kush by Car(f 102).The file’s principal correspondents are: HM’s Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary at Tehran, Reginald Hervey Hoare, Hughe Montgomery Knatchbull-Hugesson, Horace James Seymour; the Foreign Office.Also included in the file are cuttings and extracts of articles from the Persian press (in French, with some accompanied by English translations), that were written in response to articles in the British press.The file includes a divider, which gives a list of correspondence references contained in the file by year. The file is a direct chronological continuation of Coll 28/9 ‘Persia; Internal affairs; Shah’s tours in Persia: general situation reports’ (IOR/L/PS/12/3404). The file includes:Two reports written by the British Consul-General for Khorasan and Sistan (Captain Giles Frederick Squire).
