1. ‘File 15/40 Economy in use of stationery’
- Description:
- Abstract: The file contains several Government of India memoranda dating from 1939 to 1941, mainly from the Labour Department and the Office of the Controller of Printing and Stationery, India. The memoranda stress the need for economy in the use of paper and other stationery by all government employees due to war-time conditions, which had caused domestic shortages in paper production, increased costs and difficulty in securing imported stationery requisites. The memoranda announce a reduction in stationery budgets and provide detailed practical instructions for staff about how to both limit their use of stationery and reduce their need for government printing and publications.The file also contains Office Order No.11 dated 6 February 1942, compiled and circulated by the Secretary to the Political Resident in the Persian Gulf, to all Residency and Agency staff in the region. This document contains detailed instructions on the economic use of paper and other stationery by local staff, when carrying out their normal duties.Physical description: The main foliation sequence commences at the front cover and terminates at the back cover; these numbers are written in pencil, are circled, and can be found in the top right corner of the recto side of each folio. - Abstract: The file contains several Government of India circular letters and memoranda 1926-1928, 1930 and 1937-1939, for information and guidance on the ordering and supply of government paper, printed forms and other items of stationery. These letters of instruction were issued mainly by the Office of the Controller of Printing, Stationery and Stamps and its branches, in particular, the Central Printing Office, New Delhi and the Central Stationery and Stamp Office, Calcutta.The instructions refer to amendments made to the following regulations: the Stationery Office Rules, 1924; the Rules for the Supply and Use of Stationery Stores, 1924; the Rules for Printing and Binding, 1925 and the Rules for the Supply of Articles for the Public Service. Published extracts from some of the amended rules are included in the file.The file also includes the following correspondence:Letter dated 30 June 1930 from the Office of the Controller of Printing and Stationery, Calcutta to the Political Agent, Bahrain, notifying him of the stationery budget allocated to the Political Agency, Bahrain for the financial year 1930-1931;Letter dated 1 October 1927 from the Central Printing Office, New Delhi to the Secretary to the Political Resident in the Persian Gulf, Bushire, discussing the supply of new judicial forms in Arabic for use in the Court of the Resident, Aden and potentially elsewhere in the Persian Gulf.Physical description: Foliation: numbered 1-3, 5-17, 17A, 18-19, 27, 29-46. The numbers 4, 20-26 and 28 have been omitted. - Abstract: This file consists largely of correspondence concerning stationery supplied to the Political Agency, Bahrain. Items ordered include rubber stamps, notepaper, envelopes, and printed forms. Much of the correspondence relates to the details of orders and the granting of export permits (from the Government of India) for those orders. Correspondents include the following: the Political Agent, Bahrain; the Secretary to the Political Resident in the Persian Gulf; the Political Officer, Trucial Coast, Sharjah; the Times Printing and Publishing Company Ltd; Thacker and Company, Bombay (booksellers, publishers, stationers and printers); the British Consulate, Khorramshahr; Gale and Polden Limited (printers, publishers and stationers).In addition to correspondence the file includes two folders (requested from Gale and Polden by the Political Agent) of specimens of Christmas cards produced for embassies, consulates, and other diplomatic missions, as well as colonial protectorates. In a letter, dated 2 June 1949 and addressed to the Christmas Card Manager at Gale and Polden (folio 105), the Political Agent requests 200 Christmas cards, similar in style to the card for the British Embassy, Washington DC, which features in one of the specimen folders. The file contains a photograph (and its negative) of the Political Agency, Bahrain. - Abstract: This file consists of letters, telegrams and notes between officials acting on behalf of the Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations, London, and the Political Resident in the Persian Gulf regarding the requesting of supplies of stores, stationery and flags for the Residency and Agency at Bahrain, and the Trucial Coast, Kuwait and Muscat Agencies.The file includes a divider which gives the subject number, the year the subject file was opened, the subject heading, and a list of correspondence references by year.
