- Abstract: This file is comprised of the correspondence and notes relating to two manuscripts by George Nathaniel Curzon. Firstly, 'Notes to accompany Map of Persia' (Published by the Royal Geographical Society), and secondly, the notes for Curzon's introduction to an edition published by Macmillan of 'The Adventures Haji Baba of Ispahan' by James Morier. - Abstract: The item consists of copies of correspondence enclosed with an extract Marine Letter from the Government of Bombay to the East India Company Court of Directors, dated 30 September 1847.The item contains a letter from the Superintendent of the Indian Navy to the Governor of Bombay, dated 7 August 1847, enclosing reports of two journeys made into the interior of the South Coast of Arabia by members of the Company’s Surveying Brig, Palinurus. 3. 'Report by Major Wilson, Resident at Bushire, dated 11th September 1830, with observations on the Political condition of the Dourannee & neighbouring states by Mr. C. Masson. Vol: 4'

- Abstract: The item consists of a copy of a covering letter from David Wilson, Resident in the Persian Gulf, to the Government of Bombay, with enclosures. It is the fourth in a series of four items on general affairs in the Persian Gulf (the others are: IOR/F/4/1398/55440, IOR/F/4/1398/55441 and IOR/F/4/1399/55442).The enclosures to Wilson's letter consist of copies of observations made by Charles Masson, an individual who presented himself at the Residency in Bushire [Būshehr]. Between 1827 and 1830, Masson had travelled extensively throughout the Dourannee [Durrani] states (parts of modern day Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan), before arriving at Bushire via Muscat, Kishmee [Qeshm] and Bassadore [Bāsa'īdū]. Masson's observations relate to the political status, culture, languages and religions of numerous states, provinces and tribes, and the routes taken during his travels. They include details on: people encountered; caravan entourages; landscapes; climate; agriculture; and villages and fortresses along the routes. Particular attention is paid to Ranjeet Sing [Ranjit Singh, Ruler of the Sikh Empire] and 'the Seicks' [Sikhs]. 4. Jonasand Lion: Journal on Jonasand Lion, Richard Swanley

- Abstract: This volume consists of a journal kept by Richard Swanley of journeys on board the East India Company ships the Jonasand the Lyon[ Lion].The journal contains the following:Daily entries (although there are not entries for every day) mainly recording winds and the weather, and the course and progress of the shipMonthly tables recording the following: day of the month, course, leagues, winds, latitude, longitude, East or West, variation, and Easterly or Westerly (although again there are not entries for every day of the month, and there are not entries for every month).The volume includes Swanley’s journal for a journey from Tilbury to Surratt [Surat] (folios 6 to 24), with Swanley initially serving as Master’s Mate in the Jonas, commanded by Captain John Weddell. The Jonasset sail from Tilbury on 17 March 1620 [New Style date 1621], with the Whaleand the Dolphin, and was later joined by the Lyon[ Lion]. Swanley records events including the ship anchoring at St Augustine’s Bay on 23 July 1621, and Swally [Suvali, near the city of Surat] on 26 September 1621, after which the ship anchored at Jasquis [Jask] on 14 November 1621, and Kishme [Qishm] on 23 January 1621 [1622]. The entries in this part of the journal are dated 19 March 1620 [1621] to 27 December 1622.This is followed by Swanley recording that they set sail from Qishm on 4 February 1621 [1622], and that on 7 February 1621 [1622], Swanley joined the Lionat Combrom [Bandar Abbas, also spelled Combroom in this volume], bound for Surat, with the Roseand the Richard, anchoring near the Bar of Surat on 27 February 1621 [1622] (folios 25 to 26). The entries in this part of the journal are dated 4 February 1621 [1622] to 27 February 1621 [1622].Following this, Swanley records the journey from the Port of Swaley [Suvali, near Surat city, also spelled Swalley in this volume] to the Red Sea in the Lion, accompanied by the Roseand the Richard, with five merchants, and back again to Suvali (folios 27 to 36). Swanley records events including leaving the Port of Suvali on 24 March 1621 [1622], Socratore [Socotra] being seen on 2 May 1622, land on the Coast of Arabia being seen on 22 May 1622, and the ship anchoring at Mocha on 9 June 1622. The entries in this part of the journal are dated 14 March 1621 [1622] to 27 December 1622.Swanley then records his journey from Surat to England in the Jonas, with the Londonand Lion(folios 38 to 53). He records setting sail from the Port of Suvali on 18 December 1622, and other events such as the Comoro Islands being seen on 31 January 1622 [1623], and the ship anchoring at St Helena on 8 April 1623. 5. 'Abstracts of ship’s journals preserved in the India Office (1610-1623)'

- Abstract: This volume contains handwritten abstracts of journals of the Seventh, Tenth, Second Joint Stock, Fifth Joint Stock, and Seventh Joint Stock voyages of the East India Company, dating from 1610 to 1624, which had been preserved in the India Office. The volume is undated.It includes a tabular index to abstracts numbered 1 to 30 (folio 2 verso to folio 3), with columns listing the following: abstract number; voyage number; dates covered by the abstract; writer of the journal; ship; Chief Commander of the voyage; number of pages; and a brief description of the contents of the abstract. The abstracts included in this volume are numbers 9-11 and 13-30. There is a note on folio 1 of the volume stating that abstract numbers 1-8 and 11-12 'have been printed in the Hakluyt Society's volume containing the Narratives of the voyages of Sir James Lancaster'.The volume contains abstracts of the following journals:9. 6. ‘Wybard Lieutenant Travels in Nedjd in Arabia’

- Abstract: The item consists of copies and extracts of correspondence, minutes and resolutions cited in, or enclosed with, letters from the Government of Bombay [Mumbai].The item contains copies of research papers compiled by Lieutenant William Henry Wybard (also written 'J. W.' and 'Wyburd') during his exploration of the Province of Nedjd [Najd] between 1831 and 1833, the purpose of which was to find out more about the Wahabees [Wahabi] and their country. The research papers include:'Journal' (ff 61-69) which documents Wybard's journey from Bushire [Būshehr], via Bahrein [Bahrain] and Katiff [Al-Qatif], into Nedjd where he visited Ajeer [Al ‘Uqayr?] and the town of Elreasa (also written 'Elriasa' and ‘Elhasa’) [Al Hufūf]'Elreasa' (ff 70-71) which includes a description of the town, its defences and buildings'The Island of Bahrein' (ff 71-72) which contains a description of the island's: size; geography; city of Manama; town of Moharraq [Al Muharraq]; and the relationship between the Bahrein Sheikhs [Shaikhs] and the Imaum [Imam] of Muscat.After being pressed for more information which he had originally promised, Wybard provides copies of his researches on the history and current status of:'Kaab commonly called Chaub' (ff 78-86), the Chaub [Banū Ka‘ab] tribes'Bussora' (ff 86-88), the city of Bussora [Basra]'Bedowins of the Benee Laum' (ff 88-90), the 'Benee Laum or Lakhem' [Banu Lakhm] tribe'Bedouins of the Montifick' (ff 90-91), the Montifick [Muntafiq] tribe'Bedouins of the Shumer' (ff 91-92), the Shumer [Shammar] tribe.The item also mentions the advances provided for Wybard by the Government of Bombay and the discontinuation of his research due to ill health.The correspondents of the item are: Wybard; the Government of Bombay; David Anderson Blane, Resident in the Persian Gulf; J Crawford, Officiating Superintendent of the Indian Navy; and R Cogan, Assistant Superintendent of the Indian Navy. The entries are double-dated and include the dates in both Julian and Gregorian calendars.The journal contains daily entries in eight columns: Week Days, Month Days, Winds, Courses, Distance, Latitude, Longitude, and Bearings of Headlands and Variations. The entries consist of remarks only when the ship is at anchor. The journal provides navigational information, notes of sightings of other vessels, and other observations made during the course of the voyages. The journal entries are dated 25 March 1620 to 13 June 1622.The entries record the East India Company ship Londonsailing from the Downs on 25 March 1620, and then record the ship’s arrival at the following places: Saldaniya [Saldanha] (24 June 1620), Swally [Suvali, near Surat] (9 November 1620), and Jasquis [Jask] (19 December 1620).Jennison records the London’sarrival at Swally on 3 February 1620 [New Style date 3 February 1621], before stating that he left the Londonand went to be Captain of the Garde(a Portuguese prize ship) from 18 March 1620 [New Style date 18 March 1621] until 5 April 1621, after which he transferred to the East India Company ship Hart, and then to a captured vessel which had been bound for Muscat.The journal then records the ships anchoring at Soar [probably either Sohar or Sur, Oman] on 24 June 1621, after which Jennison returned to the Londonfor a while and then rejoined the Hart.Subsequent entries record Jennison’s ship reaching Surratt [Surat] in October 1621, before anchoring at St Hellena [St Helena] on 19 February 1622 [New Style date 19 February 1623], and in the Downes [Downs] on 7 June 1622.Entries for when the ship was at sea mostly record: measurements of latitude and longitude; the course of the ship; the position of the ship and bearings of land; and wind direction.The journal also includes tables recording the following: the date, knots (Kn:), fathoms (ffa:), leagues (Lea:), course (cour:), latitude (Lat:), longitude (Long:), wind, and variation (Va:); for 26 July to 7 November 1620.Entries for when the ship was at anchor include information about goods being unloaded from the ship, and goods being loaded onto the ship, and other ships encountered.Physical description: Foliation: the foliation sequence (used for referencing) commences at the inside front cover with 1, and terminates at the inside back cover with 33; these numbers are written in pencil, are circled, and are located in the top right corner of the recto side of each folio.

- Abstract: This volume consists of a journal (log book) recorded by Robert Bootle, Commander of the East India Company ship London. The entries are dated 3 October 1723 to 15 April 1725, and record the journey of the ship from England to Mocha and Bombay and back again to England.The journal records the ship’s departure from Deptford and arrival at Gravesend on 3 October 1723, and the ship passing the Lizard on 20 November 1723. The entries also record the ship anchoring at the following places: Table Bay (27 February to 16 March 1723/24); Mocha (7 May 1724 to 15 July 1724); Bombay Harbour (3 September to 15 September 1724); St Hellena [St Helena] (13 to 23 December 1724). The journal also records the ship’s arrival at Plymouth on 25 March 1725. (Both Old Style and New Style dates are given.)Journal entries for each day when the ship was at sail (past the Lizard) contain tables recording information including: hours of the day (H), knots (K), fathoms (F), wind direction, the number of miles sailed each day, and navigational information relating to latitude and longitude.The entries also include comments, mostly about the following: the direction of the wind and other comments about the weather; the course of the ship; adjustments to the sails and other actions performed on board the ship; and sightings of other ships, land, and birds.The ship was at anchor at Mocha for longer than the other places at which it anchored, and entries for when the ship was at Mocha also mention chests of treasure, iron, steel, and elephants’ teeth being unloaded from the ship and brought ashore, and bales of coffee being received on board the ship.There is a note on folio 2 of the volume stating that the journal was received on 12 May 1725.Physical description: Foliation: the foliation sequence (used for referencing) commences at the inside front cover with 1, and terminates at the inside back cover with 101; these numbers are written in pencil, are circled, and are located in the top right corner of the recto side of each folio.
