- Abstract: The file concerns proposals for the supply of drinking water to Kuwait (also referred to as Koweit). It was said in 1947 that the need for fresh water was one of Kuwait's most pressing requirements, and now that the state was in receipt of considerable royalties, Kuwaitis would not be satisfied until the need was met (folio 48).In addition to India Office (later Commonwealth Relations Office) minutes and correspondence, the file includes correspondence from the Political Agent, Kuwait (including emphasis on the need for a British, rather than an American company to undertake the work, folio 48); a proposal that the Associated Ethyl Company of London might be invited to combine their operations with the distillation of water for Kuwait; correspondence with the British Chemical Plant Manufacturers Association, London, and British firms interested in the project; and papers concerning a report on a municipal water supply for Kuwait by Mr Hogg of J.D. & D.M. Watson Limited, Consulting Engineers, for the Shaikh of Kuwait.The file includes a divider, which gives a list of correspondence references contained in the file by year. - Abstract: The volume contains printed selections from official papers of the Foreign Department of the Government of India (telegrams, official letters, and extracts from official diaries), and maps, concerning the settlement of the disputed frontier between Afghanistan and Persia in Seistan (also spelled Sistan in the volume) [Sīstān] during the period 1901-10. The papers are mainly in the form of dispatches from the Government of India, Foreign Department, addressed to the Secretary of State for India. Each despatch includes a list of documents ('enclosures') cited. The later papers are accompanied by minute sheets of the Secret Department, Government of India.The papers cover: the work of the Arbitration Mission under Colonel (Arthur) Henry McMahon (British Commissioner, Seistan Arbitration Commission), 1903-05, including events up to the departure of the Arbitration Mission, proceedings of the Mission, demarcation of the boundary from Koh-i-Malik Siah to Siah Koh, the Seistan water dispute, and McMahon's report (folios 22-30) on the final settlement and demarcation of the boundary between Persia and Afghanistan, followed by a complete list (folios 31-34) of the boundary pillars on the Perso-Afghan boundary; and reports on the distribution of water in Helmand, 1909-10.The main correspondents are: McMahon; His Britannic Majesty's Minister, Tehran; the Secretary of State for India; His Britannic Majesty's Chargé d’Affaires, Tehran; His Britannic Majesty's Consul for Seistan and Kain [Kūh-e Kā’īn]; and the Amir of Afghanistan.Each part includes a divider which gives the subject and part numbers, year the subject file was opened, subject heading, and list of correspondence references contained in that part by year. - Abstract: The volume concerns the payment of loans by the Government of India to Shaikh Mubarak [Mubārak bin Jābir Āl Ṣabāḥ] of Koweit [Kuwait].The principal correspondents are the Political Resident in the Persian Gulf; the Political Agent, Kuwait; the Viceroy of India; the Shaikh of Kuwait; and senior officials at the Foreign Office, the India Office, the Treasury, and the Government of India.The papers cover: loan of 100,000 rupees to the Shaikh of Kuweit in 1904 'to meet the payment due to his nephews under the recent arbitration award' (f 114v), June 1904 - February 1905 (ff 90-121); loan of 200,000 rupees to the Shaikh of Kuweit in 1909, who needed ready money as a result of 'large advances made to pearl merchants who cannot be pressed for immediate repayment, and to the fact that his brother, Sheikh Khazal, has asked for postponement of large loan due to Sheikh Mubarak' (f 79), February - October 1909 (ff 37-89); loan of 200,000 rupees to the Shaikh of Kuweit in 1913 as a result of financial needs arising from water supply difficulties in Kuwait, distress amongst the diving community caused by a falling pearl market, the Shaikh's inability to sell stocks of dates, and the need to support the owners of pearl boats and so prevent a reaction on the local trade of Kuwait (ff 24-25), December 1913 - February 1914 (ff 17-36); papers concerning the water supply at Kuwait, contained in Government of India memoranda dated September-October 1914 (ff 4-16); and India Office letter proposing remission of the loan of 1914, in view of the assistance rendered by the Shaikh of Kuweit 'in maintaining the blockade at Koweit', 4 April 1918 (f 2).The date range gives the covering dates of all the documents in the file; the covering dates of the minute papers given on the subject divider on folio 1 are 1904-14. - Abstract: This volume comprises two parts that contain correspondence pertaining to two distinct topics.Part one discusses the possibility of discovering oil deposits in Koweit [Kuwait] and Bahrein [Bahrain], with some reference also made to the potential for deposits to be found in Syria and the Farsan Isles [Farasan Islands]. Part two concerns the provision of a permanent water supply in Koweit [Kuwait].Both parts consist primarily of correspondence between British officials, principally at the India Office, the Foreign Office and the Government of India.The volume comprises part 1 and 2. Each part includes a divider which gives the subject and part numbers, year the subject file was opened, subject heading, and list of correspondence references contained in that part by year. This is placed at the back of the correspondence.Physical description: The papers are arranged in approximate chronological order from the rear to the front of the volume.
