- Abstract: This secret summary was compiled by the Army Department, War Section Case and printed in Simla in September 1916.It contains letters and telegrams sent from 10 February 1915 to 16 May 1916 between the officers of the Government of India, the Director of the Royal India Marine and the Director-General of Port Administration and River Conservancy, Basra. - Abstract: This item consists of copies of a Political Despatch from the Government of India Foreign Department to the Secretary of State for India, dated 11 August 1873 and received by the India Office Political Department on 8 September 1873, forwarding copies of papers relating to the transfer to Bussorah [Basra] of the depot of HM steamer Cometat Maaghil [Magil] on the Euphrates, and concurring with Colonel Charles Herbert, Consul-General at Baghdad and Political Agent in Turkish Arabia, that the change is desirable. - Abstract: This item consists of copies of a Political Despatch from the Government of India Foreign Department to the Secretary of State for India, dated 21 November 1873 and received by the India Office Political Department on 15 December 1873, forwarding copies of a letter from the Political Agent in Turkish Arabia [Ottoman Iraq] to the Secretary to the Government of India Foreign Department, communicating further particulars respecting the abandoned depot at Maaghil [Magil] on the Euphrates River. - Abstract: The file contains correspondence sent during 1837 to Captain Samuel Hennell, the Officiating Resident in the Persian Gulf. It primarily concerns the operations of the Indian Navy in the Persian Gulf; the movement of ships, the transfer of officers, and the payment of allowances. Major topics covered include reports on the suitability of Bussora [Basra], and Mahamerah [Khorramshahr] as sites for coal depots; and an experiment to measure the consumption rate of two types of wood — as fuel — by the steamer Hugh Lindsay.The Euprhates Expedition is also a significant topic in the file; this concerns instructions related to moving the steamer Euphratesto either Mahamerah, or Muscat so that it may be towed back to Bombay by the Hugh Lindsay. The expedition is also attempting to raise the steamer Tigris, which sank in the Euphrates river.Intermixed with the correspondence is a list of books left with Captain Hennell at Bushire, a list of instruments at Bushire, a list of stores aboard the Euphrates, and a receipt for 2500 German crowns from Syed bin Selim, Vikeel of Aboothabee [Sa‘īd bin Salīm, Wakīl of Abu Dhabi]. The correspondence covers preparations for the expedition, the sea journey from Liverpool to Sowedich [Samandağ] and the overland journey from Sowedich to Bir [Birecik]. The correspondence also discusses delays to the expedition caused by the obstructionism of various Ottoman officials, particularly Mehmet Ali, Pasha of Egypt, and his son Ibrahim Pasha.The primary correspondent is the commander of the expedition Colonel Francis Rawdon Chesney.
