- Abstract: This item consists primarily of copies of correspondence, minutes and resolutions cited in, or enclosed with, letters from the governments of Bengal and Bombay.The letters are principally directed between the Government of Bombay, the Government of Bengal, and the Imaum [Imam] of Muscat [Āl Bū Sa‘īd, Sayyid Sa‘īd bin Sulṭān], and focus on the return of the French brig La Vigilanteto the Imaum. The main discussion is whether the capture of La Vigilanteby HMS Concordewas lawful, as Concordecompelled the Imaum of Muscat to force La Vigilanteto leave the safety of the port. As a result, the French plundered Arab ships belonging to Muscat, and so the Imaum demanded the return of La Vigilantein order to return her to the French and restore good relations. The possibility of a British alliance with Muscat and the terms of Muscat's neutrality are also discussed, as well as the practicalities of returning La Vigilanteand her crew, which was accomplished in February 1808. - Abstract: Extract of Bombay Commercial Consultations prepared by Charles Walking, the Secretary to the Court of Directors, in which he includes an enclosure from the Resident and joint Factor at Bussora [Basra] and from the Resident at Bushire [Bushehr], Samuel Manesty and Harford Jones respectively. The enclosure covers: the Residents’ correspondence with Persian officials; the Persian Government’s views on the establishment of British factories in the Kingdom of Persia [Iran]; the privileges and the commercial advantages that would be granted by the Shah of Persia to the East India Company (EIC); and a list of the different kinds of goods usually brought to Bushire from India.The enclosure also includes a ‘Report of the Commerce of Arabia and Persia’ (ff 208-286) based on information already available from previous reports of the Bushire Factory. The report is prepared and signed by the Residents of Bussora and Bushire.
