Abstract: This item consists of a Political Despatch from the Government of India Foreign Department to the Secretary of State for India, dated 23 January. The despatch acknowledges receipt of the Secretary of State for India's Secret and Political Department Despatch No. 242 dated 5 December 1873, giving cover to an authenticated English translation of the recent Slave Trade Treaty with the Sultan of Zanzibar, and points out an apparent discrepancy in Article II of the translation as compared with the same Article of the proposed Treaty modified by Dr John Kirk, the Political Agent and Consul, Zanzibar. Abstract: The file comprises telegrams, despatches, correspondence, memoranda, and notes, relating to the provision of assistance to the cousin of the Sultan of Muscat.The discussion in the volume relates to the decisions, logistics and practical arrangements concerned with financial and logistical assistance to enable Saiyid Dhiyab bin Fahad, the cousin of the Sultan of Muscat Sa'id bin Taimur, to pay off his debts and exit from Paris during wartime conditions in 1941. Correspondence (folio 63) discusses that Saiyid Dhiyab bin Fahad was interned by the Germans at St Denis from 17 October to 11 December 1940. Approval was required under the provisions of the Trading with the Enemy Act, 1939.Further discussion surrounds the arrangement with Thomas Cook to transfer funds and arrange other practicalities via their agents in Lisbon and Lyon to enable the journey of Sayid Dhiyab with his children from Paris to Egypt. Abstract: This item consists of a copy of a Political Despatch from the Government of India Foreign Department to the Secretary of State for India, dated 29 October 1873 and received in the India Office Secret Department on 27 November 1873, forwarding a copy of papers relating to the proceedings of the Political Agent, Muscat, in connection with the purchase there of four 'slaves' by an officer of a Turkish vessel; making certain enquiries relative to cases of sale of 'slaves' at Muscat to Persian or Turkish ships; and requesting a copy of any treaties or conventions which may have been entered into since 1857 by Turkey for the suppression of the slave-trade.
